“What's up with that chick?” Lily finally asked, lighting a cigarette.

Cat told her about the bathroom episode.

Lily grinned and poked her. “That's pretty hot.”

“Yeah, if I'd have been drunk in a bar and looking for raw anonymous sex up against a wall, I‘d a had it made.”

“No, this is even better, spontaneous anonymous sex in a bathroom.”

“For cryin’ out loud, Lil. I'm getting too old for this shit.”

Lily patted Cat's shoulder. “Maybe you're growin’ up.”

Cat lit a cigarette and watched the smoke curl loose, swirl, and whisk out the window. That's how things were feeling lately, she thought. Like she was drifting. Crazy people pushing physical space, Lily crowding thinking space, women crashing sexual space, like she was smoke, without weight or integrity - nothing. She rubbed her sore neck. She was getting too old or too tired for this work, anymore. It was dirty and dangerous, she thought, reaching down and smoothing her bandaged thumb over her bandaged ankle.

She stubbed out the cigarette in the ashtray, and stole a glance at Lily. What the hell are we doing? she wanted to shout. Is this it for the rest of our lives? For the rest of my life - ?

But she said nothing.

The truck lurched over Cat's rutted driveway and came to a stop.

“So, where's this birthday party happening tonight?” Lily asked.

“OzGirlz,” Cat said, climbing out. “Sure you don't want to come?”

“I'll just wait for the reviews.”
